Duties

Job Summary:

The Learning Disabilities Association of York-Simcoe (LDAYS) is seeking dedicated volunteers to support youth with learning disabilities and ADHD in improving their social skills through engaging 6-week sessions and Summer Camps. Volunteers will contribute to a play-based program designed to help youth overcome challenges associated with learning disabilities and ADHD, fostering growth in social settings. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, volunteers will assist in planning and facilitating activities, working closely with participants to build confidence, self-esteem, and friendship skills. Sessions are held weekly in the evenings for one hour over six weeks, while camps run Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. Programs are offered at various locations across York Region and Simcoe County, and volunteers must commit to the full duration of the program they support.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of the overall program plan, including lesson plans, goals, and outcomes, to participants ages 8-12 with learning disabilities and/or ADHD.

  • Support the facilitation of activities in discussions, arts & crafts, sports, drama, games, etc.

  • Encourage and develop participant’s social skills strategies using various activities and resources that will be provided.

  • Provide participants with an environment that fosters positive self-esteem and self-confidence, which in turn will enable the participants to make and keep friends.

  • Support discussions and activities on topics such as confidence, positive self-esteem, and making friends using the program material that is provided.

  • Nurture and develop all participants' potential skills, abilities, and motivate children for success.

  • Support regular communication with participants to monitor progress.

  • Support the supervision and promotion of safety, respect, and inclusivity amongst all participants.

  • Support facilitators in leading participants in special events, swimming trips, and outdoor activities.

  • Participate in training sessions as required.

  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of Learning Disabilities and ADHD.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Education: Recreation and Leisure, Registered Social Worker, Social Service Worker, Child Development, Child and Youth Worker, or related fields

    • High school diploma may be accepted based on experience 

  • Experience: Supporting camps or programs, experience working with children with disabilities is preferred. Previous related job experience is considered an asset.

  • Certifications: Access to transportation and recent Vulnerable Sector Screening Check is required. CPR and First Aid is an asset but not required. 

  • Skills: Strong communication and organizational skills. Must be patient, punctual, and reliable.
